Melanotan II is a synthetic peptide that mimics the action of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It was originally researched for its effects on skin pigmentation and appetite regulation. Primary effects: Increased melanin production → darkening (tanning) of the skin without UV exposure, appetite suppression (observed in early research), and increased libido (a commonly reported side effect due to central nervous system activity).
How it works
MT2 activates melanocortin receptors (mainly MC1R for pigmentation and MC3R/MC4R in the brain), which stimulates melanin production and affects appetite and sexual arousal pathways.
Research status
• Melanotan II is not FDA-approved for medical or cosmetic use
• Most data comes from early clinical research, animal studies, and anecdotal reports
Potential side effects
• Nausea and flushing (especially early on)
• Increased blood pressure or heart rate
• Darkening of freckles or moles
• Fatigue or yawning
• Appetite changes
